There is no better way to truly explore a country than on a bicycle. It allows you to go pretty much anywhere the roads, trails or tracks will take you and, as you can stop just about anywhere you please, you can delve into the local culture with unrivalled freedom.

And, what’s more, you can opt to either go it alone or to share your adventure with friends or loved ones.

You can also choose to put a cycle tour together yourself or get someone else to do all the hard work for you, leaving you with nothing more stressful to concern yourself with than to simply turn up and ride.

Freewheel Holidays, which is a sister company of Sports Tours International, caters for those looking for exactly this type of leisure cycling holiday.

Offering over 100 destinations right across Europe, each trip is designed to be the perfect blend of cycling and sightseeing, with everything from accommodation and itineraries, to quality bike or e-bike hire and luggage transfers all taken care of.

Here we look at just one of the  options on offer – The Danube Cycle Path. To get a better idea of the sheer variety of other types of rides available – from Danish islands to mainland Spain – see freewheelholidays.co.uk or give them a call on 0800 7555385.

Cycle the Danube

The famous Danube river is one of the longest in the world and runs through the heart of central and southeastern Europe.

What’s more, a significant stretch of it has a superb cycle path running alongside it, allowing you to ride right next to this magical waterway as it meanders through a bewitching landscape which remains little known to most Brits.

Freewheel Holidays offers a variety of packages that allow you to explore the best that this Danube Cycle Path has to offer.

For example, you can choose to bike (or bike and barge) your way from the historic town of Passau in south Germany to either spectacular Budapest in Hungary, or Austria’s elegant capital Vienna.

Alternatively, you can ride a section of it along the German-Austrian border, starting in the beautiful baroque town of Schärding in Upper Austria and ending in the enchanting city of Linz.

Whatever trip you choose, you can expect around a week of easy riding with distances ranging from around 15-60km a day along a riverside path that often follows a downhill camber.

Along the way, you’ll have plenty of opportunity to explore the charming towns and villages that dot the route, sample the region’s exquisite ice creams, cakes, coffees, beers and wines, as well as indulge in a bit of messing about on the river!

Perfect for families, couples or just a group of friends in search of something special to do on two wheels. Prices start from £549 per person.

Freewheel Holidays can also arrange trips to Austria, Belgium, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France,  Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland. See www.freewheelholidays.co.uk for details.
