Grab your Velo and head North for a unique ride in the Pennines

6 Mar 2019

Register now for Velo North and ride on closed roads in the stunning area around Durham

On Sunday 1st September, the historic cathedral city of Durham will play host to 15,000 riders taking on the Velo North sportive. Heading out for a challenging but highly rewarding ride in the stunning countryside of England’s far North East, riders will be welcomed back into Durham at the end of the circuit.

Importantly, this is the only closed road sportive in the north of England and will give an experience like no other on the traffic-free roads of the Pennines.

Route choices

There will be two routes to choose from, covering either 50 or 100 miles. Both start in the shadow of Durham’s chief landmark, its stunning cathedral, before heading out into the rugged North Pennines countryside.

There are multiple climbs on both routes but the scenery, rare opportunity to ride on closed roads and reward of a return to Durham at the end will keep everyone enjoying the ride as they count down the distance to the finish line.

Both routes will pass through the marketplace of Bishop Auckland and take riders past Auckland Castle en route to the finish on the cobbled streets of Durham.

It’s also a ride of the rivers as the shorter, 50 mile, route crosses the River Wear and the longer, 100 mile, course runs along the River Tees for part of its length.

Bring your climbing legs, the 100 mile route will ascend 7,200ft while the 50 mile still packs in 4,600ft.

Northern passion for cycling

The Velo Series brings its latest event to the north due to ‘an unrivalled passion for cycling.’

‘We thought it was about time the north of England had a major closed road sportive,’ the events team added, and Durham was chosen for being a ‘spectacular location.’

Why ride?

The sportive market in the UK is a busy one, from local club events to internationally owned subsidiaries putting on a full calendar of dates, but the Velo North stands out.

Fully closed road riding in an amazing part of the UK, with a start and finish in a historic city centre.

Take on the ‘marathon of cycling’ – 100 miles, and do the whole thing without the concern of motor vehicles. You’ll be surrounded by 15,000 likeminded riders and can opt for a premium participation experience.

This really is an event that should be on every rider’s calendar for 2019.

Pre-register before midnight tonight (Wednesday 6th March) and then get your entry in on Thursday 7th March at:
